久留米大学先端癌治療研究センター
先端癌治療研究センター設立当時の1997年にくらべ、がんの診断や治療法は飛躍的に進歩しました。抗体医薬、分子標的薬、そしてがんワクチンといった新たな治療薬が登場し、実地医療の場において使用されるに至っています。久留米大学先端癌治療研究センターにおける研究がその一端を担い、我が国における牽引役をはたしてきたことは我々にとって大きな誇りです。また、がん医療の飛躍的進歩に伴い国民のがん医療に対する認識およびそれを取り巻く環境も変わりつつあります。がん医療の均展化が叫ばれる一方で、より高度でより先進的な医療を受けたいという要望も高まっています。このような要望に応えるために「高度医療評価制度」が平成20年からスタートしました。当センターで開発されたテーラーメイドがんペプチドワクチン療法は未承認薬としては初めて厚生労働省より「高度医療／第３項先進医療」として本年６月に承認となりました。このことは、我が国における臨床研究全体の推進にとって非常に大きな布石を投じたことになります。
私立大学高度化推進事業（ハイテクリサーチセンター整備事業）の３期目が平成22年度で終了するにあたり、本年度のリサーチレポートは３期目（平成18年度～22年度）の総括といたしました。今後も「先端的がん治療法の開発」のための研究活動を推進してまいりますので、皆様からのますますのご指導とご鞭撻を賜りますようお願い申しあげます。
Great progress has been made in diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for cancer since the Kurume University Research Center for Innovative Cancer Therapy was first established in 1997. New kinds of anti-cancer drugs, such as antibody preparations, molecular targeting drugs, and cancer vaccines, have been developed and some of them are currently being used on a daily basis. We are proud that our leadership and our research at the Center for Innovative Cancer Therapy have played a role in this progress. Public attitudes toward cancer and cancer care have also undergone a great change during this period. On the one hand equal access to cancer care is being promoted throughout the country, while on the other the need for innovative cancer therapies is steadily increasing. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan established a new assessment system for innovative medical care (Kodo-iryo) in 2008. Our personalized peptide vaccine therapy for prostate cancer was approved for use under this system in June of this year. This accomplishment is expected to have a major impact on the promotion of translational research in our country.
The current fiscal year is the last year of the 3rd-term of support by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for the establishment of high-tech research centers at private universities Japan. This research report summarizes the results of our efforts over the last 5 years.
We are continuing to work hard to promote more rapid and aggressive development of innovative cancer therapies. I look forward to your ongoing support, and welcome your guidance and suggestions.
