Professor and Chair

Yuichi Shima, MD, PhD
Professor Shima graduated from Kyushu University School of Medicine in 1996. After clinical training, he joined Professor Ken-ichirou Morohashi's laboratory at the National Institute for Basic Biology and trained in basic research until 2008. He subsequently worked at Kyushu University and Kawasaki Medical School, where he gained extensive experience in anatomy education. He became Chair Professor of our division in October 2021. His research focuses on gene regulation and development of endocrine and reproductive organs.

Professor (concurrent appointment at the Advanced Imaging Research Center)

Keisuke Ohta, PhD
Professor Ohta studied genetics at Kyushu University and joined Kurume University in 1993. He has contributed to anatomy research and education, including active and collaborative learning. Since 2017, he has been based at the university's electron microscopy facility, which was reorganized as the Advanced Imaging Research Center. His work develops new imaging technologies for previously inaccessible biological structures. Keywords: FIB-SEM tomography, array tomography, CLEM, and mitochondria.
Assistant Professors

Miki Inoue, PhD
Dr. Inoue studied science at Kyushu University and trained in Professor Ken-ichirou Morohashi's laboratory, investigating the differentiation of Leydig cells in sex development. She continued her research as an assistant professor at Kyushu University and joined our division in October 2022. Her current work combines developmental biology with large-scale data analysis to understand how individual cells coordinate the construction of biological systems.

Kanako Miyabayashi-Shima, PhD
Dr. Miyabayashi-Shima began her research career studying the ovary at Tohoku University. She has investigated gonadal development and tissue-specific gene regulation under Professor Ken-ichirou Morohashi. Her current work uses genetically modified mice to study the origin and differentiation of the splenic vascular system and the molecular mechanisms underlying morphological change.

Fumiya Takahashi, PhD
Dr. Takahashi studied biological production at Hiroshima University and completed an integrated doctoral program at Kyushu University. Under Professors Ken-ichirou Morohashi and Takashi Baba, he investigated the establishment and systemic effects of sex differences in the adrenal gland. After continuing as a research fellow, he joined our division as an assistant professor in September 2025.
