Message from the Chair

My name is Yuichi Shima, and I joined Kurume University as Chair Professor in October 2021. The Department of Anatomy has a long history, and I am the sixth professor to lead the Division of Microscopic and Developmental Anatomy, formerly known as the Second Department of Anatomy.

Education

Anatomy, the study of the structure of the human body, is a foundation of medicine and one of the first professional subjects encountered by medical students. Although medical education and the demands placed on physicians continue to evolve, anatomical knowledge remains fundamental to medical practice in every country and every era. We take pride in supporting this foundation and are committed to providing excellent anatomy education at Kurume University School of Medicine.

Research

Research is indispensable to university life. To me, it is more than a profession; it has been a guiding principle since I chose to become a scientist. I believe that strong research identifies what is essential, reasons logically, and communicates clearly. Regardless of discipline, such work has the power to inspire others. I will continue striving to produce discoveries that resonate with the scientific community.

Our Vision

Education and research may appear separate, but they share the same foundations. The ability to identify the essence of a problem and explain it clearly is vital in both. We aim to advance distinctive research from Kurume to the world while nurturing people who will take their next steps from Kurume into Japan and the international community.
