About Internships: We accept students for internships in our laboratory.
This is a message from Ms. Kokoa Yamada (Constructor University, Bremen, Germany), who participated in the summer internship at our lab in 2023.

Working as a research intern at Professor Shima's laboratory was a truly fruitful experience. As a student interested in biotechnology, it was exciting being able to conduct various experimental techniques/methods such as H&E staining, immunostaining and PCR in order to understand the mechanisms of sex development in mice models. While my major entails both the chemical and biological aspects of the health sciences, since I work for the Professor of Medicinal Chemistry in my university, conducting research focusing on anatomy and biochemistry was an eye-opening experience; instead of focusing on drug design and the treatment of diseases, medical research (as opposed to medicinal research) in Kurume University focuses mainly on the diagnosis of diseases.
As academically enriching as the laboratory experience itself was, the work environment in Professor Shima's lab was even more remarkable. I could genuinely say that I have never worked with instructors as warm, welcoming and supportive; it was because of the comprehensive lectures and thorough guidance provided by the members of Professor Shima's research team that I was able to acquire many laboratory skills and conduct dissection on mice (of various developmental stages) for the first time. One of my favorite moments from the internship was getting to know the members of the research team over lunch breaks; it was truly a pleasure listening to stories of their family, hobbies, childhood, etc..
I am very grateful of the 2 months I got to spend in Professor Shima's research team. I couldn't thank the team enough for how much I gained from this internship, and would highly recommend this experience to any student in the health/medical department. If I ever were to return to Japan for research, it would be my utmost pleasure to work with them again.

This is Amina Simou’s reflection on her one-month stay in 2025 as an exchange student with IFMSA.

My one-month research internship in Japan, organized through IFMSA, turned out to be one of the most formative experiences of my academic journey so far. From the very beginning, I felt supported—not only during the practical work, but also in the preparation phase. Before my arrival, I had requested information about the experiments, as anatomy had always been a challenging subject for me during med school. Professor Shima responded with clear information and thoughtfully structured materials, starting from the basics, so I didn't feel overwhelmed. Once in the lab, I was provided with written protocols ahead of time, giving me the chance to study and understand them before carrying out the procedures—which I found far more effective than simply being shown what to do once. During the internship, I performed experiments such as Western blotting, dot blotting, and immunostaining myself, under the close supervision and guidance of Kanako-sensei. Her support was incredibly valuable—not only did she walk me through the techniques with patience and clarity, but she also made sure I understood the purpose behind each step. I was encouraged to ask questions and give input, and I never felt like "just an intern"—I felt involved and taken seriously as a contributor. Even though many of the methods were new to me, the positive and respectful environment helped me grow in confidence. With Kanako-sensei’s guidance and through consistent use of the lab notebook, I was able to develop both technical skills and a deeper understanding of the research process. By the end of the internship, I felt capable of performing core techniques like Western blotting and immunostaining with a good level of independence. What made the experience truly memorable was the lab culture. The team was incredibly kind, inclusive, and warm. We would eat lunch together every day—usually bento—which created a strong sense of community and made me feel truly welcome. I was genuinely sad to leave, as I had never worked in such a supportive environment before. Looking back, I am deeply grateful for this opportunity. It strengthened my skills, boosted my confidence, and showed me how rewarding collaborative research can be. I would also like to say a heartfelt thank you to the entire team. Everyone made me feel welcome from day one, and I truly appreciated the warm atmosphere, the daily conversations, and the kindness I was shown throughout. It meant a lot to me and made the whole experience unforgettable. Thank you again for the support and encouragement throughout the internship!
Warm regards,
Amina Simou
